Ryanair Free Bag: Your Questions Answered
Ryanair’s free small bag allowance is 40 x 30 x 20cm, including wheels and handles. It must fit under the seat in front of you and is included on every fare.
On 4 September 2025, Ryanair increased the free small bag allowance from 40 x 20 x 25cm to 40 x 30 x 20cm and resized its gate sizers to match.
Ryanair publishes no weight limit for the free small bag. The allowance is based on the maximum dimensions, which are checked at the gate.
Yes. Turned to 40 x 25 x 20cm, an old 40 x 20 x 25cm bag sits within Ryanair’s new 40 x 30 x 20cm limit. You simply have less space than the new allowance permits — around 20 litres compared with up to 24 litres.
The small bag is free, measures up to 40 x 30 x 20cm and goes under the seat. The larger cabin bag requires Priority, measures up to 55 x 40 x 20cm, weighs up to 10kg and goes in the overhead locker.
Yes. The 40 x 30 x 20cm limit includes wheels, handles and pockets, so measure the bag at its full packed size.
Yes. Wizz Air’s free personal item allowance is also 40 x 30 x 20cm, making this size suitable for both Ryanair and Wizz Air.
