A 40 x 30 x 20cm bag measures 40cm tall, 30cm wide and 20cm deep, about the size of a small everyday backpack. That’s large enough for a weekend’s clothes and small enough to slide under an aeroplane seat.
A 40 x 30 x 20cm bag has a maximum volume of 24 litres. Multiply the three dimensions and you get 24,000 cubic centimetres, which is 24 litres. Actual packing space is slightly less once you allow for the fabric, frame and zips.
It comes in three main styles: a backpack you wear on your shoulders, a trolley backpack with wheels and a pull-out handle, or a holdall you carry by hand or over one shoulder. Every style in this collection is built to the same 40 x 30 x 20cm outer size.
Ryanair and Wizz Air both allow a free under-seat bag of 40 x 30 x 20cm. It also fits within easyJet’s larger 45 x 36 x 20cm under-seat allowance. It is 5cm too deep for airlines using a 40 x 30 x 15cm personal-item limit, such as British Airways, KLM and Air France.
Yes, our trolley backpacks have wheels and a telescopic handle and still measure 40 x 30 x 20cm overall. Airlines measure the whole bag, including wheels and handles, so a wheeled bag has to fit the full size with them attached.
A backpack keeps your hands free through the airport and holds its shape well under a seat. A holdall is quicker to pack and unpack and squashes more easily into a tight space. Both carry the same 24 litres.
Yes. A 40 x 30 x 20cm bag holds 24 litres, while a 40 x 20 x 25cm bag holds 20 litres. Ryanair moved its free bag from the smaller size to 40 x 30 x 20cm on 4 September 2025.
